Reclaimed Wood Floor {Paper Flooring}

I've done something crazy. And believe me, I've heard about how crazy it was. I've gotten some strange looks. Some "that will never work" comments. Some snickers and chuckles and rolling eyes. One "why don't you just do the real thing".

I ripped out my perfectly fine carpet.

I cut and painted. I glued and glued. I stained and poly'd.

And I created this.

Yes. It's a paper floor. Can you believe such a thing?

Either can I.

I love it. I LOVE IT.

It's not perfect. Neither am I.

Sometimes you have to follow your own path, even when it's the path no one else travels.

  1. Huh? You bought sheets of paper that look like wood paneling and glued it to your floorboards?

  2. No-I cut builders paper (comes in a giant roll at Lowes-super thick) into "planks" equal width (5 inches or so I think), painted them, used a faux wood grain tool to create a wood grain. Glued them down, stained them with wood stain. Sealed them (10 times) with wood floor polyurethane. Top nailed with vintage nails just because. It was a giant decoupage project, but much stronger. I have vacummed, mopped and kids have abused it for a few weeks now.

  4. Wow! This is amazing!!!! I've seen crumpled paper bag floors and been tempted to try it. I like the idea of creating faux wood. You have amazing patience to do that in such a large space. :)

  16. I did this to our master bedroom about fifteen years ago and love it.I used something called wall paper liner it was rather stiff and heavy. Applied it to the floor with wallpaper paste , a concrete floor. It's beautiful. Way to go....karen

    1. How did it stood up to 15 years of use? Did you do anything special to maintain it?

  17. Found your blog via Remodleaholic. Love your floors. They are amazing! We are wanting to replace flooring on the cheap and have been looking at the paper bag flooring. While I liked the idea, I didn't want to go for the leather look. I love the faux wood floor look, though. I think it will be going in on our entire upstairs - hallway, bedrooms and bathroom! One question, though. When you laid the paper down, did you overlap the planks, or just set them side by side?

    Thanks!

    1. Gabriel- I put them side by side for the most part, but because I'm not a machine, and can't cut perfect straight lines no matter how hard I try, there were some boards that had to be overlapped, and some that had bigger gaps than I wanted - I preferred to keep them side by side without overlapping (even if it created a gap) because I didn't like the way overlapping looked. Then before I stained, I touched up any gaps with the paint I painted onto the boards to hide them. Hope that helps. Be sure to visit me on my facebook page and leave pictures of your completed project to inspire others!

    2. Can you give more information on how you did this project and how it's holding up? What glue, paint, sealer you used?

  18. How has it held up since you installed it? Is it coming off, ripping, or peeling? I want to try, but I'm afraid my 4 kids and 2 dogs might be too much for paper floors.

  19. Would one be able to just glue the paper sheet to the floor then paint the lines and faux wood look instead of cutting individual planks?

  21. Similar to Mellony Bell's comment above, I was wondering if I could paint the entire roll first, and then cut the planks, then glue down, then stain, and then seal. I wonder if that would work. I am currently converting my lower level to my studio (I am a professional photographer), and the space that I will be using is 1300 sq. ft. of space, and concrete floors, so it will be a huge undertaking, but I got quotes for acid staining and they were charging upwards of $6000 to do. I think I am going to do a test in an area of the basement I am not using, and see if that works. Thanks for your post. Your floors look amazing!!!

    1. Hi
Just wondering if you tried this method (painting the entire roll first and then cutting, glueing... etc)

    2. Hi Melisa, I actually ended up staining the floors as seen here on my blog. I felt out was way too large of a space. However, I do plan to do it in a storage area and possibly the stairs to my studio. I still love the idea!

  28. It looks really amazing1 Mostly, It's quite confusing to choose a perfect floor for our home. Therefore, we used to do lots of experiments with our flooring, several remodeling, and reclaim on flooring. So that, we can get a perfect floor for our house. Here also, we can get a perfect example that how to keep our flooring in a good condition and how to reclaim it. Thanks for such a wonderful article.

  29. Thank you very much (TUDaH RBaH). I was able to do this to my floor because you were generous in giving us the information. I am grateful to you. I read your instructions on Remodelaholic, the instructions that you gave. I am a witness for Yah's Kingdom, so let me leave you with this information, which will be useful to any who hear it. The real Name of the Creator is Yah (short version) and Hayah (ancient version) . The Southern Kingdom changed the Name, hiding it within itself, during Babylonian exile, changing Hayah to Yahuah. (I think this is the history, from the RYH, not online, believe me). Also, we are to do the 7 appointed times, which are called MUGhDY (My Witness), which are written of in Leviticus 23. We just finished PSHh( Pesach), finished First Fruits and are in the week of Unleavened Bread. There is a curse related to the G-o-d name and people may be startled by this, but it is easy to look up yourself. In Strong's Concordance (online) or in a Hebrew Scriptures, you can see Isaiah 65:11-12, talking about a sword allotted to those who set a table for G-a-d and who set a drink offering for M-N-aH. Most people think this curse does not apply to them, since they think they are not calling out to G-a-d. But hear this: The Hebrew G-a-d and the English-speaking name for G-o-d are the exact same pronunciation. They are the same. I tell you people this so you can be protected. Who wants a curse from the Creator, because they are unknowingly told the wrong name of the Creator? None, I pray. The tribes of Israel were scattered for doing false worship. So I (from the tribe of GD, was scattered here in America, with many of my tribe, so we can tell the nations truth, before we go back to HaARTS YSHRAL (the land of Israel). Halaluyah means "highest praise to Yah." Let us praise Him, all the day long. Halaluyah.
